Dave Young

Old Soldiers

Dave Young has performed professionally as a bassist since the age of 16, then around 15 years ago he tried his hand at vocals, graduating rapidly to lead male vocalist and now fronting his own band.

He has mastered 4, 5, 6 and 7-string, fretted and fretless bass and has performed as bassist with the following acts: The Manhattans, Herb Reed and The Platters, Sleepy LeBeef, Eric Preston's Purple Haze and Phoenix. He has also performed as the opening act for: Johnny Cash, Joe Diffie, Roy Clark, The Gatlin Brothers, George Jones, The Kendalls, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson.

Among the awards Dave's collected are: Nashville's Entertainer-Indi Association - 1997 Most Promising Artist. Massachusetts Country Music Awards Association: - 1994 Bass Player of the Year. 1993, 94 and 95, Vocal Harmony of the Year. 1993, 94, and 95 & 4-piece Band of the Year.

This is Dave's debut album as a solo artist, and the 10 tracks contain an even mix of ballads and more uptempo numbers.

The track chosen to be the first single release from the album is "New Fire Old Flame", a catchy tune, that bobs along at a steady pace, and would sound good in the car on a sunny day with the top rolled down, as would the road song "Fifty Miles To Macon", a song that has him driving home to make up with his partner after an argument.

Other uptempo songs on here are the albums opener "Old Soldiers", "Love Slipped Up" and the self penned "White Line Driver", a trucking song, co-written with Denny Mack.

On the ballad side, "When The Vows Break" is a play on words about the break up of a marriage, while "Stayin's The Only Way To Go" has the subject trying hard to keep a marriage together.

Other ballads on the album are, "Livin' Within Your Love", written by Rick Hogan and Brad James, "After Five", from the pen of Cheryl Watson, and a cover of the old Larry Gatlin hit "I Don't Wanna Cry"..

My favourite track on the album is the lead off single, "New Fire, Old Flame", a good choice to introduce Dave Young as a solo artist on CD.
