A long time before Alabama, Restless Heart, Exile, The Mavericks, Etc. came into musical prominence, there was a band out of Austin, Texas called "Cooder Browne" known by many as "The Best Band," who led the way and opened the door for others to walk through. The Man that put them together, got them the job as opening act for Willie Nelson and a contract on Lone Star and Mercury Records was Colonel Buster Doss.

After the break-up of the band in 1980, The Colonel moved back to Nashville to manage Grand Ole Opry acts Billy Walker, Billy Grammer and a dozen others. There he began to develop the "Rooster Quantrell" idea. He called a life long amigo of his, Max Harrison (who drew the Gene Autry & "Smiley" Burnette comic books) to draw up the logo for "Rooster Quantrell". But the right person had to be found to portray "Rooster"! It was a long search! This person not only had to have a great voice but would have to be a top-shelf musician to meet the standards the Colonel wanted and had set for Rooster Quantrell.

The Colonel has owned Country Music Theatres from Missouri to Texas, and it was on one of his Jamborees in Ashdown, Arkansas that he found "Rooster", a young man who plays Trumpet, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Etc. The Colonel began to develop his musical style. A lot of rainy nights and long days went into this project before "Rooster" began to emerge. This 20 track album is the result of all his hard work.

First released in 1998, this album is a sheer delight for fans of Western/Swing, with many of the tracks on here having already been released to radio as singles and gaining much deserved airplay. All songs are written and produced by the Colonel and it very difficult to pick from the 20 excellent tracks on here, but here goes!

The album kicks off with the lively "Where Were You" before the tempo slows for "Don't Lay Your Troubles On Me" a mid-paced Jazz/swing song that has also been given a good outing via Canada's Pap & The Sidemen, in fact another good track on here, "Heads You Win" is the title track of Pappy's latest CD. I've always been a sucker for a good shuffle and there's a few good one's on here with "Shoulder You Cry On," and "I'll Forgive You," a couple of track's that are sure to get the feet tappin'.

"I'll Cry All The Way To The Bank" and "Super Hero's" are a couple of good fun song's; while the mid paced Jazz/Swinger "Today Is Going To Be That Someday." and the lively "Movin' Out, Movin' Up, Movin' On." have also been covered, very successfully, by young Troy Cook Jr on his latest album, with the latter sure to be a favourite with the linedancers with it's chunky beat.

Another track I liked on here is "Rose Of San Antone," not the Bob Wills classic, but a totally different song penned by the Colonel, in fact there isn't a bad track on the album, all are first rate songs, and most … if not all ….. have also been recorded by other artists. The album has been around now since 1998, but I am sure it will still be available. If you have any problems getting hold of the album, E mail the Colonel at; cbd@vallnet.com and I am sure he will tell you how to purchase a copy.
