Based
in Carlisle, in the North of England, Singer/songwriter Alan McCulloch
assembles some of the U.K. country music scenes finest musicians
(Geoff Betsworth (ex Lemon Grass), John Permenter (Dez Walters Band
and Clint Black), Phil Middleton, Ian Sands (The Bunch, Vaquero
and The Cheap Seats Band), Len Whitehead (The Bunch and The Cheap
Seats Band) and Darren Gibson (Vaquero), for this, his second album
of all original material.
Kicking
off with the very catchy two stepper, "Going
My Way" he then moves into the title track, "Hey
Mr Sunshine" another very catchy tune....showing a strong
Mavericks influence...... that has already seen moderate success
via it's release on the Country Hotdisc, although for me, it deserved
to have done a lot better. By now Alan had my undivided attention
as it was becoming clear that here was a very good album of all
original country music from a U.K. artist. And he didn't disappoint
as he followed up with crackers like the mid paced, "Forget
About You," the bouncy, "Warm
Hearted Wonderful" and "I've Seen
Better Days," a dancefloor filler for sure.
Alan
wrote to me a few months ago to say that he had been invited to
go to Nashville to co-write, so the word is obviously getting around
about this talented singer/songwriter. I don't know if Alan has
taken up the offer yet, but with songs of this quality, it can surely
only be a matter of time before he attracts the attention of some
of some of Nashville's major names.
