Released back in 1996, "The Last Country Song" was recorded partly at Starday Studio's in Nashville and partly at Willie Nelson's Pedernales studio in Texas, where Willie also joined Hermann on duet vocals. The two songs concerned are a cover of Ernest Tubb's "A Little Bit Of Everything In Texas" on which they are both also joined by Norma Jean and a great Willie Nelson penned shuffle, "The Part Where I Cry." Other duets on the album see Sonny Osborne, Clay Blaker, Michael Ballew, LeRoy Preston, Maryann Price, Johnny Bush and Lois Johnson joining Hermann at the mike. The track which caught my attention most is a wonderful country version of "The First Of May," a former pop song, penned by the the Gibb brothers (The Bee Gee's) on which Hermann is joined by Lois Johnson. Hermann gives the song a whole new lease of life. I don't know if he has ever released it as a single, but if not, I think he should. There are 7 very strong, self penned tracks on the album like, "Fool On A Stool" a very catchy shuffler, "Please Send In The Clowns," not the Judy Collins pop hit, but a lively two stepper that is sure to fill the dancefloors plus the story of "Jesse Walker" a co-write with G Camp. Hermann sings about how the nomadic life of a musician can put a big strain on a marriage in "Slow Down," a song, I'm sure many can relate to, while "Marie Jolie Coeur" is a cajun flavoured waltz. "Heartcore Country" is a two paced song with a lively verse followed be a slowed down chorus and "Gone A Million Miles" is a catchy tune that has him telling his woman he's had enough of her cheating and this time he's gone for good. With the title track, a duet with Johnny Bush on a J Bush/J Harris co-write closing the album These are just over half of the songs that make up this very generous 20 track album, an album that just has to be great value for money. If Hermann Lammers Meyer is a new name to you, then "The Last Country Song" would make a great introduction to this talented entertainer. Check it out!!!
