I was first introduced to Kristyn Smyth through her successful release on the Country Hotdisc with "The Heart Of Dixie," of which I wrote, "While most of today's female, so called Country artists are putting out pop records, Kristyn is very modern, but very definitely COUNTRY. Hopefully, "The Heart Of Dixie" will do well enough for Kristyn to show the major labels that you can appeal to today's young country music fans without crossing over into pop." Well, the song did do well and I now get the chance to review her debut album for Barrister Records. The album contains a fairly even mix of slow, mid and uptempo songs, with stand out tracks for me being, the afore mentioned "The Heart Of Dixie," "Strong As An Oak," a terrific song about having the strength to walk on out on a failed relationship, "The Likes Of You," "Never Gonna Leave To Gone," another successful single release in the EMS European charts and the title track, "Got A Little Devil In Me" a great song, penned by Lamar Morris that tells of growing up and learning about love for the first time. I also enjoyed very much the Lamar Morris/Wes Laird penned "It Just Happened" surely another contender for release as a single. Kristyn lists her biggest influence as Faith Hill, but listening to this excellent album of modern Country music, I would place her nearer to Pam Tillis. With her beautiful looks, terrific voice and the backing of talented label honcho's Lamar Morris and Wes Laird, it is surely only a matter of time before Kristyn Smyth is picking up awards alongside Faith and Pam. All I hope is that she doesn't follow Faith Hill into Pop music, Country needs young talent like this! Website: www.BarristerRecords.com E mail: barristerrecords@yahoo.com |
