Penny Jo Pullus joined the Austin, Texas music in the late 90s with a style of music she herself calls, "Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons and The Rolling Stones all rolled into one lanky body." This 7 track album, which is Penny's second, has I would presume, been put together specially for the 'Women Of Austin' tour that see's her performing here in the UK with Karen Poston later this month, (March 2002), as she has a third album also due out some time this month. Kicking off with "Faithless Heart" a toe-tapper, with a rhythm that reminds me of Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," the tempo slows for a tale about a local truck-stop in "Best Texas Grocery," a tune that benefits from some tasty accordion from Chip Dolan. "Time To Come Home" is a bluesy tune with organ backing from Chip Dolan, as is the albums closer, the slow "He Plays," the story of a talented guitar player who can't keep off the drink. Penny rocks it up with the lively, "Honey Please Be Kind," while "Cajun Cassanova" is a Cajun/Rocker .with a late 60s feel to it .. that didn't really impress me too much. With the mid-paced two stepper "How Many Times A Fool," the album succeeds in showing many different sides to this Texas singer/songwriter in just 7 tracks. Favourite's for me were; "Faithless Heart" and "How Many Times A Fool." U.K. Dates for March 2002 can be found on the 'TOURS' page of this site Website; www.pennyjopullus.com |
